Waterfront Studios to host Entertainment Master Class

Waterfront Studios will be the host venue for the Entertainment Masterclass’ Sitcom and Comedy module to be held from 9-15 September 2011.

Waterfront Studios’ Head of Production, Markus Davies has been attending the EMC week-long modules held over a year, which includes lectures, interactive workshops and plenaries.  “EMC is an investment of four courses and while the course content is incredible, it is the networking of the EMC platform that really stands out”. This year there have been modules in Germany and Canada, but Cape Town will soon host about 30 executive level international delegates and ten influential comedy experts as speakers.

“The international game is a big boys club, but if you have a good product you can be guided through the EMC network to pursue projects at a level of decision makers that would not otherwise be accessible”, says Davies.
 
Producers who are seriously intent on playing in international market can fast-pace their networking. EMC as it is not intended for students, but rather for high-level producers at executive management level.
 
“Hosting the EMC in September in Cape Town will be an incredible journey for South Africans as we are comedy and sitcom champions and will also now learn from the best, world-dominating North American and European shows”.   

Confirmed speakers include Norman Kurland who was the literary agent for X-Files, Will and Grace, Scrubs and Magnum PI and Humphrey Barclay, the UK’s most prolific comedy writer/ producer well-known for his collaborations with John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Emma Thompson and Dame judi Dench.

Slipstream Film Collective Collaboration

In June 2011, the notoriously quiet winter season for the tv industry warmed up with an innovative film initiative. Director Jemima Spring challenged herself to bring to life a script she had written called Slipstream, but within a month and on a less-than-shoestring budget. The film tells the story of a 40 something woman, battling with a career and kids, who has the disturbing experience of slipping between two different realities, one in which she lives and one in which she and one of her children dies. It's a personal story that Jemima hopes will speak to parents: “The main message is: be present in every moment of your life”. The story also resonated with many industry people, with seasoned professionals volunteering their expertise, gear and locations. “It was a bit like stage diving, jumping into the unknown, but everyone caught me and threw me up into the air!” says Jemima. Waterfront Studios was delighted to assist Jemima with final post-production. “It was a privilege to have talented, experienced people in the Waterfront Studios labour ward as we completed the film. It was a real pleasure to be able to access colourist Kyle Stroebel and Flame artist Stuart Wilson.” One of the innovative aspects of the project was that all updates were posted through a Facebook Group, allowing a supportive community to coalesce around the film. “There was also a group of producers who have supported the film and gave so much encouragement.”
